Call the Police Before doing anything, it is important to call the police. Not only will quickly notifying the police help them to catch the burglars more quickly, but their report is also needed to file a successful insurance claim for stolen items.
Take Pictures Take pictures of any damaged items or areas in your home from which items were stolen. Try not to touch anything and leave your home exactly in the condition in which you found it. This will make it easier to prove your insurance claim later.
File a Police Report After the police arrive and inspect your home, they should ask you to file a report for the stolen and damaged items. You can do this at your home or go down to the police station. If you live in the City of Glendale, you can even file a Glendale police report online.
File An Insurance Claim As soon as you can after a break-in, call your insurance company to file a claim. It is best if you do it within 24 hours. They may send over a claims adjuster, so don’t clean up anything until you have touched base with your insurance company. Try to find as many receipts as possible, and include those with the pictures you have taken. If you have a pre-recorded list of all the items in your home, use that as another method of proof. Also, if you have any video footage from security cameras, that may be helpful to submit as well. Lastly, make sure that you have submitted a report to the police, as the insurance company will need the police report to verify your claim.
Revisit Your Home’s Security Measures Take a look at your home security to put your mind at ease. Consider installing a security camera or getting stronger locks. Security measures can earn you discounts on your premiums, so make sure to ask your insurance provider about available discounts.
