Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements in California

  1. when a police officer or other law enforcement agent requests it

  2. when you are involved in a traffic accident

  3. when you renew your vehicle registration

Requirements for Private Passenger Vehicles Any individually owned vehicle that is not used for rent or public transportation qualifies as a private passenger vehicle. Private vehicles must have three components in their insurance plan:

  1. $15,000 for death or injury to one person

  2. $30,000 for death or injury to more than one person

  3. $5,000 for property damage If you do not get insurance for your vehicle, then you could be cited or even get your vehicle impounded. In case of an accident, you will be personally responsible for any damages that are incurred.

Requirements for Commercial Vehicles If you are using your vehicle for any sort of business purpose, then you must have commercial vehicle insurance. This includes any vehicles that are owned by a business, rented or leased by another person, or have certain equipment. Check with your insurance agent to find out if your car needs commercial auto insurance. The insurance requirements will depend on the type of work for which your vehicle is being used.
