Home Safety Checklist Burglars hate a challenge – so the harder you make it to break in to your home, the less likely it is that a burglar will target you. Take a look at this safety checklist to get started:
Lock your doors and windows: you may be thinking this is a no-brainer, but at least 30% of break-ins are made through a door or window that was accidentally left unlocked.
Arrange for mail pick-up: piling up mail is a huge flag for burglars that your house is uninhabited. Ask a neighbor to get your mail or place a hold on your mail through the post office.
Don’t leave a spare key outside: while it may be tempting to leave your key in a planter or under the door mat, instead give it to a trusted friend or neighbor.
Hide your valuables: leaving out money, jewelry, or small electronics make it easy for burglars to grab and go. Be sure to put them in a small safe or another well-hidden location.
Put your lights on a timer: having your lights or television on a timer can create the impression that someone is home. If your house is being watched by a burglar, this can deter them from deciding to break in.
Maintain your yard: if you are going to be gone for a few weeks, try to have someone come over to mow your lawn and water your plants. Overgrown landscape is a signal to burglars that someone is gone. Another important thing to do is keep an inventory of the possessions in your home. We understand that it can seem tedious and daunting, but in the unfortunate event that your home is burglarized, this will make the claims process much easier.
